808's & HEARTBREAKS VS. BAD SINGING
I've been getting a lot of mixed feedback on Kanyes 808's & Heartbreaks album. Personally, I like it. No it's not Hip Hop, we all agree on that, and yes Kanye sings like crap, but I have a tendency to like tracks with singing by people who don't usually sing or sing like shit. I'll explain, somehow, when an artist who aint Lionel Richie sings its usually to express a feeling they cant express through rapping or in any other way. Of course I aint generalising and I aint talkin about every bad singer in the musical spectrum, but on the exceptions I am refering to, besides automatically bringing more feeling in to the tracks there is also a sense of ruggedness and realness to these tracks that when in comparisson to most of the overproduced tracks that hit the mainstream today, shines like a rough diamond in a pool of shit (mind my honest cursing, its used to serve a purpose and to get my point across). I will give you a bunch of examples of songs I love for theyre gritty, messed up, tastefully bad singing so you can make up your own mind or just label me bananas:
Hip Hop:
. Mos Def & Dj Honda - "Traveling Man"
. Black Thought - "Please Don't Go" (Unreleased)
. Lil Wayne - "Prostitute Flange"
. Big Pun - "Watcha Gonna Do"
. Remy Ma Ft. Big Pun - "Thug Love"
. The Lox - "If You Think I'm Jiggy"
R&B/Soul:
. Cody Chestnutt - "The Seed" (Original Version)
. Cody Chestnutt - "The World is Coming"
Reggae/Dancehall:
. Serani - "Play it Straight"
. Serani - "She Loves Me"
. Buju Banton - "Sleepless Nights"
. Buju Banton - "Cry No More"
Get the point? In conclusion, Kanye cant sing, this ain't Hip Hop, but I like it. Call me nuts, but I'll take gritty, whisky drunken humming over any comercial bubblegum spotless singing any day!
